MacBook case guide: How do I find the right size?

to help less experienced users choose the correct case size, we’ve summarized the key identifying features of the MacBook models for you.

MacBook Pro 13"

Nov 2016 –> 2022, also for M1+M2

  • The MacBook Pro 13" features a compact aluminum unibody enclosure with a Touch Bar instead of physical function keys.
  • It has a Retina display without a notch, giving it a more classic look compared to newer MacBooks.
  • Typically includes only two or four Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C ports and no HDMI or SD card slot.
  • Internally, it uses an Intel Core i5/i7 (up to 2020) or later Apple M1 or M2 chips (from the 2020 refresh onward).
  • Dimensions are approx. 304 × 212 × 15.6 mm.

 

MacBook Pro 14"

(M2 –> M5) Nov 2021 –>

  • The MacBook Pro 14" is recognizable by its more compact yet slightly thicker and heavier chassis.
  • It features a display notch.
  • It offers significantly more ports than the MacBook Air (e.g. HDMI, SDXC card slot, and MagSafe).
  • The speaker grilles beside the keyboard are larger and more prominent than on the Air.

MacBook Pro 16"

  • The MacBook Pro 16" is the largest MacBook, featuring a 16.2-inch display with a notch.

MacBook Air 13" Retina

  • The MacBook Air 13" Retina (2018–2021) features a classic wedge-shaped aluminum body with a Retina display and no notch.
  • The body tapers toward the front edge.
  • It typically includes two Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C ports and no additional ports such as HDMI or SD card readers.
  • Depending on the model year, it is equipped with an Intel Core i3/i5/i7 or, from 2020 onward, an Apple M1 chip.
  • Dimensions are approx. 304 × 212 × 4.1–16.1 mm.

 

MacBook Neo 13"

(Apple A18 Pro Chip) Mar 2026 –>

  • The MacBook Neo is most easily recognized by its bold color options (Citrus, Indigo, Pink, or Silver).
  • Unlike current MacBook Air and Pro models, it does not feature a display notch.
  • The chassis has a slightly more rounded design compared to other MacBooks.
  • In “About This Mac”, it shows an A18 Pro processor instead of an M-series chip.

 

MacBook Air 15"

(M2 –> M5) Jun 2023 –>

  • The MacBook Air 15" features a large 15.3-inch display with the characteristic notch for the camera.
  • It is very thin and lightweight but, unlike the MacBook Pro, has no fan system.
  • Available in subtle finishes such as Midnight, Starlight, Silver, and Sky Blue (depending on model).

MacBook Air 13.6"

  • The MacBook Air 13.6" features a 13.6-inch Liquid Retina display with a notch for the camera.
  • It is extremely thin, lightweight, and completely fanless, making it entirely silent in operation.
  • The design is flat and minimalistic, available in colors such as Midnight, Starlight, Silver, and Sky Blue.
